The 102nd Intelligence Wing welcomed Command Chief Master Sgt. Shane McGuire during the Change of Responsibility on Otis Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts, Jan. 11, 2025. As the Command Chief, he is the senior enlisted advisor to the commander on all matters affecting the readiness, training, professional development and effective utilization of more than 1,200 enlisted force personnel. Additionally, he is responsible for coordinating with staff, commanders, and senior personnel on the administration and implementation of command policy.

We asked Chief McGuire a few questions about his goals and priorities in his new position. See his answers below:

  1. Looking over your career to this point, what does it mean to you to take on the role of Command Chief?

“I’m truly humbled and honored to have the privilege to serve as the wing’s next Command Chief. My career has spanned almost 30 years and three separate Air Force Speciality Codes (AFSCs). Having the opportunity to put my efforts into representing and advocating for our enlisted members is, in my opinion, the epitome of a military career, most especially one that has seen multiple iterations of our wing. I’m so excited and encouraged to help lead our wing into the future!”

  2. As a new 102nd Intelligence Wing Command Chief, what is most important to you?

"As Command Chief, my goal is to champion an environment that fosters excellence, innovation and teamwork, and to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.  I’m dedicated to building trust, promoting open communication and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. Ultimately, the members of this wing are what is most important to me. I will do everything possible to ensure the 102nd IW is a place our members want to continue to call home."

  3. What changes would you like to see in enlisted force development, and how would you like to help make that change happen?

“We’re already off to an excellent start with the initiatives our Enlisted Force Development Committee has put into action, such as the Speed Mentoring event, as well as the implementation of a foundations-like curriculum that will go live in the next few months.

In addition to what we’re already doing, I plan to seek out additional leadership development and mentorship programs that cater to the unique needs and challenges of our enlisted personnel. Beyond that, I committed to ensuring our members are acutely aware of the educational and training opportunities afforded to them through the Massachusetts Air National Guard. We absolutely need to focus on the deliberate growth of our Enlisted force and ensure we are developing tomorrow’s leaders.”

  4. Now that you are Command Chief, what would you like the 102nd Intelligence Wing to know about you?

“There’s a ton that I’d like our members to know about me. However, if I have to nail it down to one, it’s this: I am an open book, and I want members to know that no question or conversation is off the table. I want our members to feel free to ask questions. I want them to offer me feedback, good or bad, and I want them to know that I will give them honest and transparent answers. I will not pull punches with our Airmen, and I want them to know they have the freedom to do so with me.
