The 102nd Civil Engineer Squadron Senior Enlisted Leader, Chief Master Sgt. Calvin Melvin, was promoted to the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force. Melvin was joined by family, friends and fellow members of the 102nd Intelligence Wing to celebrate his achievement and all he has done for the 102nd CES during his time in service.

We asked Chief Melvin a few questions about his time in service. See his answers below:

1. What does it mean to you to achieve the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force?

“Being promoted to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant is incredibly meaningful to me. When I see someone wearing this rank, they instantly earn my deepest respect. I’m deeply humbled to now wear this rank myself, and I am committed to upholding the legacy of the Chiefs who have preceded me.”

2. What piece of advice has stuck with you over your career?

“I’ve been fortunate to have had exceptional leaders who offered me some great advice. One thing that stuck with me is, ‘Be a Chief, don’t simply be an E-9. Take care of your people and earn the right to be called Chief.’ I will do everything in my power to live up to that title.”

3. Is there a particular memory during your time in the service that felt important to you?

“I’ve had an incredible career filled with countless great memories, making it difficult to pinpoint just one that stands out. However, one of the most significant experiences was my deployment in 2014. I was the Team Chief, leading a small team across six different countries. Throughout that deployment, I made some good decisions but also made some bad ones. It was those mistakes that taught me the most, shaping the leader I am today.”
