-- Members of the 102nd Intelligence Wing participated in a 5k Run/Walk at Otis Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts, Sept. 9.

The event was held to raise awareness for the non-profit Green Dot campaign, which aims to prevent suicide and interpersonal violence.

"Green Dot is about eliminating violence of any kind at home, not just for Airmen but for our families and for our communities," explained Lt. Col. Heather Bienz, 102 IW executive officer.

The Green Dot concept is one that symbolizes proactive actions taken to counteract or interfere with potential violent incidents represented by red dots. Green Dot encourages everyone to take action when faced with a situation that could become violent.

During the 5k, signs posted along the route reminded Airmen of the 3 Ds:

1. Distract: When you see a situation escalating to the point where you suspect there could be violence, do something to distract attention away from the escalation.

2. Delegate: Ask someone else to intervene.

3. Direct: Say something yourself to the people involved.

All of these actions are considered green dots and could prevent the red dot from occurring.

"You can change the sequence of events and stop something bad from happening," said Bienz.

The 5k event was enjoyed by all who volunteered and participated.

Staff Sgt. Amanda Darby of the 102nd Mission Support Group won the women's division with a time of 24:30. Master Sgt. John Connolly of the 212th Engineering and Installation Squadron won the men's division finishing in 18:41.

September is suicide prevention month. Your action could save a life. #BeThere
